Truckee River - September is off to a Good Start

They're smoking that dead drift cray right now.  Tying into fish in some skinny water this time of year, they're holding right up against the fast riffles and white water in the medium to medium fast current.  Had a really fun day, only wish I was on the water earlier, that's when the fishing is the best. This deep-bodied hen took me for a ride.
After good success clunk'n and plunk'n with lead and a big indicator, I picked up a few more fish high stick'n the same water...you're just able to cover different water without an indicator.
Great to see some browns out and about.
One fish wanted a salad (nymph), everything else wanted a steak (cray).

Truckee River - A Cray a Day

That's about all that they seem to want, at least the bigger fish.  I lost a toad today on cray as well, think it was a brown.  This nice bow is shaped like a torpedo, long and lean.
Right behind the white water is where they lurk
Trying to avoid the bait dunkers has forced me into fishing some new waters, thanks bait dunkers!

Truckee River - Keeps Producing

BWO's again, didn't see much of anything else, just BWO's.  It was cloudy all day and the hatch came on strongest after lunch.  Fish seem to be past the spawn now, they're spreading out and you have to go looking for em.  Another bad hero shot, darn reeds!
Nice Vista just west of town
This male was totally spawned out and thin as a rail.

Truckee River - Blue Wings

Today was all about Blue Wings, I did see some Skwalas but there is a crazy BWO hatch from 1-4.  Water got cold again since the last front so mid day is when fish are most active.   Check this guy out, almost pure cutty.  Damn reed, messed up my hero shot.

Check out One-Eye Willie, but don't feel too bad, he had no problem gorging on BWOs and had a pot belly to boot.

Truckee River - March Update

Played hooky from work for an afternoon session, only wish I had more time on the water, fish are active on 70 degree days in March.  Be careful, many of the bows are getting with it right about now, full spawn mode.  Several redds spotted from Verdi to downtown Reno.  You'll have to do some walking to find fish that aren't trying to procreate right now, but they're out there.  You can find fish in deeper runs that are still feeding on the myriad of bugs.  BWOs were being sipped readily today, but there were so many bugs, I think several patterns could have worked.  Fish are all hefty this time of year.

Truckee River - Its Getting Buggy

Bugs are out in force on warm days like Saturday, low 60's for air tempt.  This hen is just full of eggs. We saw just about everything in good numbers from some sedges...
To a few Skawalas...
To hundreds of winter stones (size 18)
Oh, and don't forget march browns, the fish seemed to key into them the most.
Dan ended up putting a hook with a barb through his hand this day, had to Bear Grill's it and push it through in order to pinch the barb, and then pull it back.

Truckee River - A Cloudy Day and Some Micro Mays

Been weeks since I've been on the river, used a months worth of hall passes to go on a baller week-long fly fishing trip to Christmas Island (post and video to be forthcoming).  Anyhow, the Truckee is in great shape, flows in the 4's and good bug activity on cloudy days, try a micro mayfly or midge pattern.  Today was a short mid-day session, lost a third fatty bow.  Fish are all pretty nice this time a year and bows are getting their spawn colors.

Truckee River - More Easterly Action

Mid-day water temps are just under 58 degrees EOT ("East of Town"), its just about perfect right now.  A decent mayfly hatch occurred yesterday mid morning, little guys, size 18 or smaller.  Fall is here and the fish are becoming increasing interested in streamers.
Love this bend and all its color.  Fishing slows mid day when it gets up over 75 degrees, but you'll still find some takers.  Its going to cool very soon and fishing should only improve.
Russian Olives are ripe right now.  These bad boys are obviously invasive, they can grow in the poorest soils often times taking over piparian corridors when the big cottonwoods die.  For this reason, beavers are a Russian Olive's best friend.  In NV they don't seem to be a huge problem and I wouldn't mind them so much but for their 4" thorns which stand guard over some of my favorite runs.
EOT there is a healthy number of juvenile fish up to 2-years, that's a great sign for future fishing.

Little Truckee - Its a Night Game

With a few lackluster sessions on the BT under my belt, I tested the LT for a few hours. Mid week, no crowds, great flows (68 cfs)...can't ask for more. One immediate hookup on a bead head caddis pupa, but then I remembered, I don't come to the LT to nymph, I come for the technical dry action. With the exception of a few random rises for PMD's mid day, there is not much surface activity until about 8PM, but then it goes bonkers, especially the last few minutes before dark.
Crazy caddis hatch, fish don't discriminate during these heavy caddis hatches, the hard part isn't getting a take, its getting the set. Had about a half hour of serious lip ripp'n just before dark, finally! Standard issue 15-17 inch head shakers, what you'd expect....the only way to totally forget about work.

Check out this huge flock of sheep, they came down unattended and had their way with the river bank for a good 20 minutes.

Perhaps someone can shed light, why are there
restoration efforts on the LT if this is allowed? I've never seen this large a flock, and never unattended, did they get out from a pasture or is this the dirt bikers revenge for blocking their trails :-) I don't begrudge people who make a living off livestock, just thought it was a bit much, anyone have any insight?
Bet these deer were glad to see those sheep boogie.

Good Times East of Town

On Friday my pops and I hooked up with Matt "Gilligan" Koles for some spring fly fishing on the Truckee River East of Reno. I have to tell you, going with Matt makes it seem so easy to catch fish, but it ain't. The water East of Reno is tough to read and difficult to effectively fish without a boat, having the guide is a huge plus. We put a few nice bows in the net but lost some nice ones too. I had a healthy rainbow pop me in some heavy water and had a hot brown wrap me up around debris on the bottom, but hey, that's why they call it fish'n. All in all, it was a great day, great weather, and a great guide. Folks, if you want to know where the big dogs lie...now you know who to call.

Thanks Matt, we had a blast!

Truckee River - They're still at it

I didn't see many bugs today with the cold snap, just a few BWO's and a couple caddis. Though some of the rainbows are finished spawning, as evidenced by numerous abandoned redds, some aren't. Today, in one of my usual haunts, I found a hot bed of spawning activity right in town. I snapped some pics but all you can see are a couple of silhouettes. This gravel bed had no less than a dozen fish moving over it and fending off redds, though I only observed one active pair spawning. I'd say about 3 or 4 of the fish I observed were over 2 feet including the pair that was still spawning, the male looked like it was a toad. It was cool just to watch them (just watch them) from a far. In another week or two the bows should be done with their ritual and back in their normal feeding slots. I got a few bows and lost a few, none near redds.

Truckee River March Update

Yesterday conditions were just about perfect for this time of year. Tons of BWO's and Skwala's hatching, and a stiff breeze knocked enough adults into the water that we saw a few fish smashing bugs on top. Flows on the NV side have been up the past couple of weekends to ~545 cfs due to higher flows coming out of the dams at Tahoe and Boca, but still, the water was in great shape.

Fish seem to be keying into either BWO's or Skwala's, depending on where you go. Some sections of water still don't have many Skwala's hatching yet; in those sections, BWO's are on the top of the menu. Fish can be found in slightly faster water than last month due to the warmer temps.

A few highlights:
Today we ran into the Western Regional Qualifier for the US Fly Fishing Team. This particular day of the event, 30 anglers were on various beats of the river throughout Reno trying to tally the most centimeters in a day. For the second part of the qualifier, they do the same on Pyramid Lake. We learned one guy got 600cm in one day on the Truckee, that's 240" between 11 fish for an AVERAGE length of 21.5" per fish! Out for 30 competitors, 6 will move on to the US National Fly Fishing Championships and possibly make the 'Fly Fishing Team USA' World Team. That's the team that would represent the US in the The World Fly Fishing Championships in Bohinjska Bistrica, Slovenia. It was a cool event to observe, though we did have to give way to competitors which were hitting some of our favorite runs...oh well, it was for a good cause.

Post mortem update: I got the real skinny from the guy in charge of the competition, the angler mentioned above who caught 11 fish...apparently the official count was 10 fish averaging 20" each, still an amazing haul!

Truckee River - Like a Roll'n Stone

Two words for the Truckee today..."Stone Flies", and lots of em. Adult Skwalas were out in force and the fish were honing in on their nymphs. I cutoff my midge dropper and rigged up a double Skwala rig, hit some faster water and had some luck. I only landed a few smallish bows, but big brownies can't resist this T-Bone of the insect world.

Stones are not in the slow water, they're in fast running, oxygenated water, and fish feeding on them are in the same. I tested out my new switch rod today (idea for the setup courtesy of Gilligan) which was awesome. Roll casts send it out there and high sticking is actually possible for the hard-to-reach water.
Fellow contributor Dan and I attend the Fly Fishing Film Tour in downtown Reno. What a great event, sweet videos and lots of avid anglers that love fly fishing as much as us. It was a treat to meet many of the moguls of the Reno and Truckee fly fishing scene (including event coordinators Matt Heron and Dave Lass) and catch up with some old pals. This was the first one they've done in Reno and the turnout was excellent. I highly recommend going to next year's event, we'll post it when it comes up.

Truckee River - Get'n Schooled

Today this chunky hen took me into some heavy water. As I pursued her, I learned the hard way just how warn down my spikes were on the bottom of my rubber-soled boots. I slipped and tripped and went swimming on more than one occasion as I tried to keep up with the fish that wouldn't quit. I was exhausted, wet and embarrassed by the end of it all, but by some miracle, I didn't loose her. Anyhow thought it was funny so I put up a short vid set to "Can't Stop It".We saw some adult winter stone flies out, and as usually, lots of midges and sedges on the rocks. The cold snap has the fish a bit off their normal game, but a #18 zebra midge duped a few fish. The bows are all looking pre-spawn by now, red sided males growing beaks and hooks and hens fat with eggs. Won't be long and they'll be on redds.

As I was going to net this rainbow, a second HUGE rainbow hen came in behind it on the hunt. It appeared to be trying to grab my Skwala Stone dropper that dangled behind. It wasn't successful, but had it grabbed it, I'm guessing I'd have lost both fish since something was bound to give. I'll be back another day to see if I can't hook that piggy.

Truckee River February Update

Minimal runoff, mild weather and relatively warm water = active fish. Saw some nice fish rise in some heavy water today.

Midges and BWO are in good numbers and the fish are definitely searching for skwalas right now.

I caught a lot more white fish than trout this session, they're definitely active and where you find one, you'll find many.

I keep hooking sedges with my dropper.
