Truckee River - They've Made It

The ice is gone, flows have been steady and the water cleared up.  Less bugs than normal but usual winter suspects are still around.  We found some surprisingly plump and health bows sipping midges and annelids.  To be this healthy they must have found some deeper water to hold in during the lean summer/fall months.
 Dan with beaut.

Tied onto one of the best bows ever on the Truckee, lost him after a few minutes,  he just threw it.  Very encouraging sign that some of the big boys are still around.

Didn't measure, but I'm guessing in the lower twenties.

Spoke with a guy who works with the Bureau of Reclamation, and he said we need Feb. and March to be 200+% of average (assuming January remains dry as expected) in order to keep storage reservoirs above specific levels to allow for enough water throughout the summer months in order to keep the Truckee River fishery alive. I am assuming it would take 10-15 years for the river to recover to the fishery we know and love today should Feb. and March not meet those amounts.

A lot is at stake over these next few months!

Yeah, unfortunately I'd have to agree with his synopsis, one more bad winter and it could be over. Thanks for the inetl.

Nice bow! After being out myself they definitely did make it through the summer, but the future is not looking good. I love the Truckee, and to see such a world class fishery bone dry would be something very hard to swallow for me.

Weather models suggest at least an average February...let hope we get dumped on through April!
